The Professional Boxing and Combat Sports Board began operating in July 1997 following an amendment to the Professional Boxing Control Act 1985, which repealed the Martial Arts Control Act 1986. The Board replaced both the Professional Boxing Control Board and the Martial Arts Board.

The objectives of the Professional Boxing and Combat Sports Act 1985 are:
  • to control professional boxing and combat sports
  • to reduce the risk of malpractice
  • to promote safety

The Act also provides that the Board can advise the Minister on all matters relating to professional contests.
