Public Liability Insurance

Community consultations undertaken as part of the Government’s Sport and Recreation strategy development in 2004 and 2005 indicated that:
  • the cost and availability of public liability insurance continues to concern many organisations
  • there is a general lack of awareness of legislative reforms that have been undertaken by Government to provide better access to insurance

In May 2005, the Minister for Sport and Recreation wrote to organisations involved in sport and recreation to outline the Government’s response to public liability insurance and risk management issues and highlight initiatives that are particularly relevant to sport and recreation organisations.

Trends in insurance for sport and recreation

Some organisations/sports now purchase insurance on a state or national basis. This helps them to control the cost to some extent and manage insurance related matters more efficiently across the sport or activity.

In some cases organisations and their insurers are rolling out risk management programs in conjunction with their state or national insurance policies.
