Research

Sport and Recreation Victoria conduct or fund research into various matters relating to the sport and recreation sector.

Spectator Behaviour in Community Sport

Playing sport is a fun and social way to keep fit and healthy. Unpleasant, confrontational or violent behaviour by spectators, particularly at junior sport, may undermine the Government's efforts to encourage participation in sport.

In order to find out more about the triggers, incidence, causes and methods of reducing such behaviour, Sport and Recreation Victoria, with support from the Australian Sports Commission, commissioned two research projects.

The 'Research into Spectator Behaviour Report' was undertaken by LaTrobe and Victoria Universities and the 'Spectator Behaviour in Sport Legal Jurisdiction Paper' was written by VicSport. The research findings are being used to inform spectator behaviour in sport initiatives, such as the 'Spectator Behaviour in Sport Information and Media Campaign'.

Standing Committee on Recreation and Sport (SCORS) Research Group (SRG)

SRV actively participates in the Standing Committee on Recreation and Sport (SCORS) Research Group (SRG), a statistics advisory body to SCORS, a Committee which comprises high-level public servants from government sport and recreation agencies around Australia.

A key SRG function is advising on how to spend pooled funds of around $400,000 a year that states and Territories allocate for research into sport and recreation.

Exercise Recreation and Sport Survey

Victorians' Participation in Exercise, Recreation and Sport is the first in a series of publications on sport and recreation participation in Victoria.

This collaboration between Sport and Recreation Victoria and Linked page opens in a new window Vic Health provides an excellent example of the Government’s objective of ‘joined-up’ services. A major Growing Victoria Together (GVT) goal is increased participation in community, cultural and recreational organisations.

This report will help people and organisations responsible for sport and recreation services to plan those services better, and to enhance sport and recreation’s contribution to building more cohesive communities in Victoria.

National Sport and Recreation Industry Database and Directory

The National Sport and Recreation Industry Database and Directory (NSRIDD) contains detailed and mostly unpublished data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Please contact us to make an appointment to get access to the database or for further information.
