Supporting Grassroots Sport
A total of 28 Victorian State Sporting Associations are sharing in $1.5 million of funding to work with affiliated clubs and associations throughout Victoria to build membership, boost participation and create new partnerships.
The Supporting Grassroots Sport Program supports the Government’s Go for your life campaign by encouraging more Victorians to get involved in sport and recreation.
Badminton Victoria is being funded to conduct a Primary School Participation Program and Coach Education/Development Program. The five week introductory program is based upon a successful pilot program held previously in Altona, and aims to increase junior participation in local competitions and also encourage older adults to take part in coaching programs. Primary school children attend local Badminton centres followed by an ongoing out-of-school-hours program.
Grassroots participation activities have already commenced with events held in Yarra City Council, Port Phillip City and Greater Dandenong areas. So far, the schools based program has been successful in attracting over 350 participants comprising a wide range of young people from under-represented groups, including 342 juniors, 180 females and 140 people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
