The report outlines that of the almost 775 million hours of exercise, recreation and sporting activities Victorians participate in each year, 80 per cent fall in to the active recreation category.

Separate from competition sport, active recreation ranges from walking, yoga and barefoot bowls to trail running, cycling, parkour and abseiling. It can be undertaken alone or with a group and is usually for relaxation, health and wellbeing or enjoyment.

The report provides an invaluable insight into the true value and benefits of active recreation and presents ways forward on how it can continue to grow in the future.

Around $8.3 billion is spent each year on active recreation in Victoria and it supports 51,000 full time equivalent jobs with Victorians receiving wellbeing benefits valued at $3.8 billion from participating in active recreation in 2017.

These insights and more highlight the key role the active recreation sector plays in promoting good health and wellbeing, and how it is a huge contributor to the Victorian economy, more than most people realise.
